NCLL 2002
English | Teacher | books |
This publication offers suggestions for developing knowledge about the alphabet. It is intended to act as a source of ideas which can be adapted for use throughout the primary years. Whereas, traditionally, it fell to ks 1 staff to teach letter shapes and phonics, many people feel that teaching needs to continue well into ks 2 to allow for consolidation, further extension, and in-depth work. Thus, this book includes:
. a brief history of the alphabet
. a rationale for teaching the alphabet in order to:
- assist young children learning to read
? facilitate reading for information and other valuable life skills
. many practical suggestions for working at ks1 & 2 on topics such as alliteration, recognising and naming letters, alphabetical order, syllabic awareness, handwriting and fonts.
